Aeolian Simplicity
Casa delle Palme is a typical mediterranean country house, characterized by white cubic shapes and many
bagghiu (columned terraces facing the sea) surrounded by
olive trees and other plants of the mediterranean scrub, such as the indigenous palms that give their name to the house.
Thick walls to protect from the sun and flat roofs to collect the rainwater (as there is no natural water source on all the sister islands).
And then of course... an incredible view on the sea at sunset,
facing Pecorini bay and Alicudi island.
Time
outside
time...
And a Blüthner piano.
How the hell is it possible to bring an old piano with a cast iron frame in this kind of remote house? Well, eight people did it, on their shoulders, back in the '80s - and I assure they still remember that.
The house features one large bedroom with two doublebeds (one wooden loft bed, click here to see the main room) and a second, small bedroom with a private terrace and outside shower.
A living room with sofa bed and a bookcase well-equipped with novels and esoteric texts, the eat-in kitchen with its original wood-fired oven and one complete bathroom (with our beloved Bertha - the washing machine).
Four big terraces will make your day with their indescribable sea view, tables for your insalata di pomodoro, lounge chairs and bisuoli (the typical aeolian tiled-seatings)... and an amazing outside shower with a view on the bay.
The furniture is essential but every piece has its history and has been chosen with love during the past 45 years, creating a mix of antiques, modern and traditional vibe.
I personally believe this is the strongest teaching of Filicudi:
What isn't there is of no use, and what is there is all you need.
This applies to creativity, relations, as well as furniture.
Give it a try, you'll discover another way to live your days.

The house is located in Canale, a quiet residential contrada at 400 metres on the sea level.
To reach the house, you can leave your car or motorino at the nearest parking (where the road ends) and enjoy a 5 minutes easy panoramic walking. If you intend to explore the island on foot, the house is very well connected to all the beaches and touristic spots through a web of ancient mulattiere (stone pathways). 20' down to Pecorini or LePunte, 45' to Porto.
Please note that the sun is a serious business, though!
To enter the house, you need to go down a staircase of 30 stonesteps, so sadly Casa delle Palme is not suitable for people with disabilities.
